Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults on heavy diesel vehicles including trucks, trailers, and earthmoving equipment using diagnostic scanners and manuals
- Perform routine servicing such as oil changes, filter replacements, brake adjustments, and wheel bearing repacks according to manufacturer schedules
- Overhaul and rebuild engines, transmissions, differentials, and hydraulic systems, replacing worn or damaged components
- Inspect vehicles for compliance with New Zealand’s Certificate of Fitness standards, repairing any defects found
- Weld and fabricate components as needed, including brackets, exhaust systems, and chassis repairs
- Test drive vehicles after repairs to confirm performance and safety, making adjustments as necessary
- Maintain accurate records of all work performed, including parts used and labour hours, using the workshop’s computer system
Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. You need at least three years of hands on experience as a heavy diesel mechanic, supported by employment certificates. A trade qualification in heavy diesel mechanics or automotive engineering is preferred. A valid driver’s licence is mandatory, and a Class 2 or higher licence is an advantage. You must be physically fit for lifting heavy parts, bending, and standing for long periods. Good English communication skills are needed for reading manuals and reporting issues.
