A respected Aboriginal health service in the remote coastal community of Maningrida is looking for a dedicated Afterhours Driver and Cleaner to support their clinic’s overnight operations. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working independently through the night, providing safe transport for residents needing urgent care, and keeping the health centre spotless between patients. You will work from 9 PM to 8 AM, three to four nights per week, totalling about seventy hours per fortnight. If you have a current Australian driver’s licence, can drive a manual vehicle, hold a first aid certificate, and are comfortable living in a remote Aboriginal community, this full time role offers an annual salary of AUD 79,115 gross plus generous benefits including seven weeks of annual leave, a travel allowance of AUD 6,000 per year, and subsidised shared accommodation. This is not a typical city job; you will be an essential part of a small team providing critical afterhours support to a community of around 3,500 people. Your ability to work with minimal supervision, practice manual handling safely, and communicate clearly will directly impact the quality of care available outside normal clinic hours.
Company Overview
The employer is Mala’la Health Service, a respected and accredited Aboriginal Corporation that provides primary health care, aged and community care, family and community wellness, and drug and alcohol services to Maningrida, located 520 kilometres east of Darwin. The organisation is committed to Aboriginal Community Control and self determination. The work culture values compassion, reliability, and respect for local traditions. The health centre operates in a remote setting where resources are limited, so every team member’s contribution is deeply valued. You will work closely with the Afterhours Nurse, ensuring that clients are transported safely and the clinic remains clean and ready for the next patient. This is not a casual fly in fly out role; you will live in the community, so a genuine commitment to remote living and an understanding of the issues faced by Aboriginal people in remote settings are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide safe and practical transportation for clients accessing the clinic afterhours, driving a manual vehicle on local roads in various weather conditions
- Assist the Afterhours Nurse by ensuring clients arrive promptly and are transported home or referred to other services as needed
- Clean the health centre thoroughly between clients, including wiping down surfaces, sanitising treatment areas, and disposing of clinical waste safely
- Maintain the cleanliness of waiting areas, bathrooms, and staff common spaces to ensure a hygienic environment for all
- Perform basic vehicle checks before each shift, reporting any mechanical issues or low fuel levels to the supervisor
- Follow all manual handling protocols when assisting clients with mobility needs, using appropriate techniques to prevent injury
- Communicate clearly with the Afterhours Nurse and other staff, documenting any incidents or unusual occurrences during the shift
Qualifications
You must hold a current Australian driver’s licence and be able to drive a manual vehicle transmission. A current first aid certificate is required. A satisfactory criminal history check is mandatory, and you must be able to obtain an NT Working with Children Clearance (OCHRE card). You must have no limitations with manual handling and be capable of aiding with CPR if needed. Good communication skills are essential for liaising with the nurse and community members. The ability to work independently with minimum supervision is critical. You must be willing to undergo a pre employment health assessment. Remote living experience is not required, but you must understand that Maningrida is a remote Aboriginal community with limited services. A commitment to Aboriginal Community Control and respect for local culture is essential.
Benefits and Perks
This full time position offers a gross annual salary of AUD 79,115, which is approximately AUD 38 per hour based on a seventy hour fortnight. You receive seven weeks of annual leave plus 17.5 percent leave loading, giving you exceptional time off. A travel allowance of AUD 6,000 per year helps cover flights or other transport to and from Darwin. Fully subsidised shared accommodation is provided, so your housing costs are covered. You can salary package up to AUD 15,900 per annum plus a further AUD 2,650 for meals and entertainment, significantly reducing your taxable income.
